Traction alopecia is caused by localized trauma from tight hairstyles that pull the hair very tight. It can take some time for the hair to be completely removed from the scalp. Single extension braids, cornrows, and tight ponytails are the most common styling causes. The constant pull on the hair shaft typically results in the hair being removed from the follicle or breaking off. This is characterized by shorter hairs along the hairline or a wispy appearance.
Traction alopecia can also be caused by the use of headgear or headscarves. Some sports-related causes include motorcycling, swimming caps, or even sweatbands. Turbans worn for religious purposes, if they are worn tightly wrapped, can also cause traction alopecia.
If the condition is detected early enough, the hair will re-grow. We offer plenty of treatment options to help speed up the hair growth process. See one of our stylists today!
